“It’s been a long time,” that’s what he tells Stiles. It isn’t that he doesn’t want to go…it’s just been a long time.
It isn’t a lie, more of an omission. Of course, Stiles knows all about Kate, he even knows how they met, but he hasn’t pieced it together yet. Why would he? He wasn’t there, he was only a kid in that hot summer and the day Derek saw her for the first time.
Kate was practically glowing; he can see it now. Her body glistened under the light of the sun, water dripping from her body as she emerged from the ocean. Her hair was soaked through, darkened by the water and brown unlike her usual honey hue. It fell in curls, clinging to the curves of her shoulders. Derek thought she was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen. He can’t look at the ocean anymore, not without thinking of her.
